PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE ACTIVATION
WORKFORCE ASSESSMENT
LESSONS LEARNED
- A County level representative (outside of the Public Health Jurisdiction) must be present throughout the process
- Scope the project by using a pilot survey
- Identify existing tools & resources (surveys, survey questions, etc)
- Analyze self-reported employee survey information to verify qualifications
- Coordinate the project timeline along side continuity planning
- Think of the project in phases and multi-year/long term maintenance
- Be realistic in the timeline for completing such a project
- Create FAQ for staff related to project and the assessment
- Surveys must include very detailed questions about clinical skills
- Communicate openly with staff about how the assessment will be used and the confidentiality of staff responses
- Factor in time needed for staff to participate in the assessment
- Consider organizing the surge response in both a team structure and by roles responsibilities
- Segment the approach into small tasks to work through one or two at a time
- Payroll and labor issues can demand a lot of attention
- Consider assessing your workforce by job classification, in addition to or, instead of a survey
- Identify the process that will be used to verify the self-reported information obtained from the survey
- Employee health and safety issues (such as immunization history and respiratory fit testing) are important considerations
- It is important to identify backups for the team leads
- Communicate with management about the staff assigned to teams
